What eyeshadow colour suits my eye colour?

Opposite shades intensify an iris, matching shades soften it, and depth against your lid decides if either one shows at all.
Opposite shades on the colour wheel make an iris read more saturated: copper on blue eyes, plum on green eyes, cobalt on brown eyes. Matching or nearby shades do the reverse, softening the whole eye instead of pulling contrast toward it. Both are correct, for different results. Neither one matters as much as whether the shade has enough depth against your own lid to show up at all.
The complementary rule is correct, and also only half the story
Most advice on this stops at one instruction: find your eye colour's opposite on the wheel and wear that. It works. Placing a shade near the opposite side of the wheel from an iris colour makes the two read against each other, and the iris looks more saturated than it does bare. That is why a copper shadow makes blue eyes look bluer and why plum does the same for green.
What that advice leaves out is that the opposite direction is not the only correct one. A shade from the same family as the iris, or near it on the wheel, does a different job: it softens the eye area into one quiet colour story instead of setting up a contrast. Navy on blue eyes, moss on green eyes, bronze on brown eyes. Neither approach is a mistake. They are two different effects, and the rule-of-thumb articles present only the first as if the second did not exist.
The wheel logic also gets shakier the further an eye colour sits from a true primary or secondary. Blue and green are real positions on the wheel, so their opposites are exact: orange for blue, red for green. Brown and grey are not wheel colours. Most brown irises read warm at the surface, so the shades that intensify them are simply the coolest options on the shelf, cobalt and violet and deep teal, working by temperature contrast rather than a precise opposite. Grey carries almost no saturation of its own, so nearly anything with real pigment in it reads as contrast against it. Treating brown and grey as if they had one exact opposite, the way blue and green do, is where eyeshadow advice quietly stops being accurate.
Pick a side on purpose. If you want the eye to be the first thing someone notices, use a shade that intensifies. If you want a soft, settled look where nothing shouts, use a shade that softens. There is no wrong answer between the two, only a wrong answer for the effect you were going for.

What eyeshadow colour is best for brown eyes?
Brown is not a wheel colour, so complementary is doing looser work here than it does for blue or green eyes: a cool shade sits opposite a warm brown iris by temperature rather than by an exact position on the wheel. Cobalt, indigo, violet and deep teal are the shades most likely to make brown eyes read brighter. For a softer result, warm bronze, chocolate, caramel and terracotta stay in brown's own family. Brown is also the most forgiving eye colour to shop for, since almost nothing genuinely clashes with it. The two things worth avoiding are in the table above: black liner with no lighter shade anywhere near it, and anything muddy enough that it neither warms nor cools the eye.
Do green eyes really need purple eyeshadow?
No single shade is required, but purple is doing real work if you reach for it. Green sits opposite red on the wheel, so plum, aubergine and burgundy, which are red pulled toward brown and violet, are the shades most likely to make green read brighter rather than merely sit beside it. Moss, khaki and deep olive do the other job, pulling the whole eye into one soft green-adjacent family instead of contrasting with it. True grass green, matched closely to the iris itself, is the one to leave alone: it neither intensifies nor softens, and just makes the lid and the eye read as one flat block of colour.
Depth against your lid decides whether any of this shows up
Hue is not the only variable, and it may not even be the important one. A shadow also has to sit lighter or darker than the skin of your own eyelid to register as a shape at all, independent of whether the hue intensifies or softens the iris. A textbook-correct plum on a plum-adjacent lid can vanish at a glance for the same reason a pale mauve lipstick can grey out on deep skin: the shade does not have enough contrast against what is underneath it to hold its own shape.
Check this before you check the colour. Swatch the shade, then step back to a normal talking distance, or take a plain photograph in daylight with your eyes open and no flash. If you cannot tell where the shadow starts and stops without leaning in close, the problem is depth, not colour. A lighter lid usually needs the shade pushed a step darker than it looks right up close in the mirror. A deeper lid can absorb more pigment before it reads as too much, because the base underneath is already carrying depth of its own.
Hooded and monolid eyes need placement, not a different colour
Most eyeshadow diagrams are drawn for one lid shape: a static fold sits above the eye and stays visible whether the eyes are open or closed, so colour blended into that fold shows up either way. Two common lid shapes do not work like that, and no colour choice fixes what placement gets wrong on them.
A hooded lid has a fold of skin that drops down and covers part or all of the crease when the eyes are open. Colour placed only in the anatomical crease, the way most tutorials instruct, disappears under that fold the moment you open your eyes and look up. A monolid has no static crease at all, so there is no natural line to blend a hard edge into. A shadow that stops sharply reads as a stripe, because nothing else on the lid breaks the edge up the way a crease would.

How do I apply eyeshadow if I have a hooded eye?
Put the depth where it stays visible with your eyes open, from the lash line up to roughly where your own fold begins, then carry the transition shade slightly above that fold rather than stopping exactly at it. Check the result with your eyes open, in a mirror at a normal distance. Holding the fold up with a finger to check your work shows you a shape nobody else will ever see, since that is not how your eye looks to anyone standing in front of you.
Does eyeshadow colour matter more than placement?
No, and this is the part the complementary rule leaves out entirely. Get the colour exactly right by the table above, then place it only where a hood covers it or a monolid has no line to hold it, and none of that correct colour will be visible once your eyes are open. Placement decides whether the colour choice registers at all. Colour decides what it looks like once it does.

This matters for eyeshadow specifically because Looksmith will not change eyelid topology, the highest severity rule in its pipeline, so a hooded lid stays hooded and a monolid stays a monolid in the result.
