What colour contacts would look good on me?

Opaque tints paint a new colour over a dark iris, and enhancement tints only deepen a colour already there. Either kind needs a real prescription.
Colour contacts split into two kinds that do not behave the same way. Enhancement tints are translucent and only deepen an iris that is already pale enough to show through, so they barely register on brown eyes. Opaque tints print a solid new colour over the iris, which is what dark eyes need. Either kind is a medical device, and needs a prescription and a fitting no matter your vision.
Two kinds of tint, and they are not interchangeable
Mixing these two up is the most common reason someone orders a coloured lens and is disappointed by what turns up in the mirror.
Enhancement tints are a light wash of colour across the whole lens, translucent enough that your own iris pigment still does most of the work. They are built for eyes that are already light: blue, grey, green, or a light hazel. On those eyes an enhancement tint deepens what is there or nudges it toward a nearby shade. There is a third, older category too, the visibility tint, a faint blue or green cast added only so a dropped lens is easier to find on a countertop. It is not built to change how your eyes read and mostly turns up on plain, uncoloured lens packaging rather than on anything sold for looks.
Opaque tints are a different object entirely. The colour is printed as a solid ring with a clear centre left for the pupil, and it sits over the iris rather than through it. That is the only design that can put a new colour on a brown or black iris, because there is no pale pigment underneath for a translucent tint to lighten. It is also the design behind every full, dramatic colour change you have seen in a photograph online.
Will an enhancement tint even show up on brown eyes?
Barely, and it gets worse the darker the eye. A translucent tint is designed to sit on top of colour and let it through, so on a light iris the two mix and the result reads as a new shade. On a medium to dark brown iris there is no light colour underneath for the tint to combine with, so the wash of colour is outmatched and the lens looks close to clear once it is in. This is the single biggest reason people are underwhelmed by a "natural" coloured lens bought online without checking which category it belongs to. Natural-sounding names do not tell you which type a lens is. The packaging usually does, in smaller print.

What is that ring I keep seeing around the edge of coloured contacts in photos?
A limbal ring is a real feature on a real eye: a thin, darker rim where the iris meets the white. It barely registers as separate on dark eyes, because the iris around it is already dark.
Cheap opaque lenses recreate that border badly. The printed colour has to stop somewhere, and a low-cost design stops it in a flat, uniform ring with none of a real limbal ring's soft gradient. Bright light and flash photography are exactly the conditions that show that transition, and they are also when a lens that has drifted slightly off-centre becomes obvious, because the printed pupil hole stops lining up with your real one. Both problems show up hardest against a dark natural iris, since there is no dark pigment of your own left showing at the rim to hide either fault. Better lens designs paint a soft gradient and a fibre pattern into the print instead of a hard edge, which is why the same named colour can look convincing from one seller and look printed from another, at a similar price.
The part that matters more than the colour
Do I need a prescription if my eyesight is already fine?
Yes, and it is not paperwork. A contact lens, tinted or clear, corrective or plano, is a medical device once it is sitting on your cornea, and its fit matters independently of whether it does anything for your vision. Two measurements decide whether a lens sits well: the base curve, how steeply it is curved to match your cornea, and the diameter, how far it should extend past the coloured iris. Get either wrong and a lens can sit too tight, restrict oxygen to the cornea, or shift and rub with every blink, none of which you would necessarily notice happening before it had done damage. A fitting is where an eye doctor measures those two numbers against your actual eye and checks it under a slit lamp afterward. It is not a size picked from a drop-down menu on a costume site.

How risky is it really to skip the exam?
Measurably, not just in theory. The FDA's own Forensic Chemistry Center tested more than 300 decorative lenses bought without a prescription, from the kind of sellers that never ask for one, and found microbial contamination in 60 percent of the counterfeit lenses and 27 percent of the unapproved ones (Land, Penno and Brzezinski, Journal of Forensic Sciences, 2018, 63(2), 635 to 639). The American Academy of Ophthalmology's clinical statement on cosmetic contact lenses, revised October 2025, cites that same testing and adds what it looks like in a patient: corneal ulcers and infections traced to unauthorised sellers, two cases severe enough to need a corneal transplant (American Academy of Ophthalmology, Cosmetic Contact Lenses: Potential Threat to Vision Health).
None of that risk comes from the colour itself. It comes from a lens that was never fitted to a cornea, made by a manufacturer nobody vetted, and worn without anyone checking it against your eye first. The colour you picked is the least dangerous decision in that chain, and it is the only one most costume-lens sellers let you make.
