Why the labels don't match across brands
No regulator sets what "medium coverage" has to mean on a foundation label, and no two labs test it the same way. A brand built on a natural-skin reputation calibrates its medium against its own light-coverage product, so a customer expecting sheer gets something closer to what another brand would print as light-medium. A brand built around full glam calibrates from the other end, and its medium sits closer to what a natural-finish brand would call full. Read the word on the bottle as a claim from that specific brand, not as a position on a scale every brand shares.
The one comparison that travels is inside a single brand's own range, where the same lab and the same pigment suppliers carry through from one product to the next. Sheer to full inside one line usually behaves the way the labels describe it. Sheer to full lining up across two different brands is closer to coincidence.

The middle two rows are where most disagreement happens. Light and medium overlap more than any other pair, because the difference between them is often one thin layer rather than a different formula.
Coverage and opacity are not the same axis
What is the difference between coverage and opacity?
Opacity is a property of the film itself: how much light passes through the layer of product on your skin, set by how much pigment is in it and what is carrying that pigment. Coverage is what you experience once it's on: how much of what was underneath, the redness, the dark circles, the broken capillaries, you can still see. The two move together often enough that people use the words interchangeably, but they answer different questions.
A thick, high-opacity foundation applied in a thin layer still gives a low-coverage result, because a film that could block a lot of light is doing it over too little of the surface to matter. A foundation with a sheer, low-opacity film can still cancel real redness if the pigment underneath is colour-corrective rather than simply light or dark, the way a green-tinted primer does more against redness than a heavier beige one does. Coverage is the outcome. Opacity is one of the things that produces it, not the only one.
Buildable describes the formula, not the level
Does buildable mean the same as medium coverage?
No. Buildable is not a fixed point on the sheer-to-full scale, it describes how a formula responds to a second pass. Some formulas reach their ceiling in one thin layer, and every layer after that adds weight and wear time without hiding anything further, because the pigment is already saturated. A formula is buildable when a second thin layer keeps adding real coverage instead of sitting on top of the first one.
That means a foundation sold as sheer can be buildable to medium, while a foundation sold as full coverage can plateau after one coat and not get fuller the more of it you put on. "Buildable" printed on a full-coverage bottle is often a claim that it can also be worn thin, which is a different promise from a sheer bottle claiming it can be worn thick.
How do you tell if a foundation is actually buildable?
Test it on the back of your hand before your face. Apply one thin layer and let it set for a minute, then apply a second thin layer over only half of what you covered. If the second half hides more of your skin's natural marking than the first half did, the formula is buildable. If the two halves look the same, you have found its ceiling in one layer, and a third layer will only add texture, not coverage.
When full coverage is the wrong choice
Full coverage is right for one job: hiding something specific well, for a set stretch of time. It is the wrong choice more often than the marketing around it admits.
It is wrong when the problem is texture rather than pigment. Full coverage adds pigment load, and pigment sits in pores, fine lines and any dry patch, so it makes texture more visible rather than less, because there is now more product to catch light unevenly across an uneven surface. If what bothers you is enlarged pores rather than redness or dark spots, a heavier base makes the thing you were trying to hide the first thing anyone notices.
It is wrong in heat and humidity, where a thick film has more to break down, and it separates around the nose and along the hairline hours before a lighter layer would have.
It is wrong for most daily wear, where the honest trade is between one flawless hour right after application and eight hours that look progressively heavier as it settles into whatever texture sits underneath. Medium coverage tends to age better across a full day, because there is less of it to move.
It is wrong whenever the goal was never to hide anything, only to even things out a little. Reaching for full coverage out of habit, on skin that does not need it, adds weight for no correction in return.
Does full coverage look worse in photographs?
It depends what is lighting the photograph. Under a direct flash at close range, full coverage is more likely to catch and hold in fine lines and settle unevenly by the time the photo is taken, and if it carries a mineral sunscreen it is also the level most likely to flash back, turning chalky white in a way the mirror never showed. In daylight, at a normal conversational distance, full coverage does the job it was bought for, evening out what would otherwise photograph as uneven. The same product that looks heavy under a bathroom bulb an inch from the mirror can look correct across a table in daylight.
