Why you keep buying the wrong shade, and how to stop

Foundation shades go wrong for five reasons, from shop lighting to MAC's inverted cool and warm letters, and each one has a fix that costs nothing.

You keep buying the wrong shade because five things go wrong: you judge it under shop lighting, you swatch it on your hand, you decide before it oxidises, you trust a shade code that means nothing outside one brand, and you buy for the skin you want. Each has a fix, and none of them costs anything.

The five reasons, and what each one looks like

Work backwards from the symptom. The bottle in your drawer is evidence, and it usually names its own cause.

Reason one: you judged it under shop lighting

Two colours can match under one light source and come apart under another. Skin and foundation are different materials with different pigments, so they do not respond to a change of light in the same way. A base that vanishes into your jaw under a warm shop bulb can read pink at a window, and nothing about the product changed. The effect has a name, metamerism, and it is why a match made under shop lighting so often falls apart at home.

Counter lighting is also chosen for the packaging rather than for your skin, and the mirror is usually lit from the front. Front light fills in shadow and flattens the jaw boundary, so the one edge you need to see is the edge the lighting hides.

Why does foundation look different at home than in the store?

Because the light is a different colour and your bathroom is not trying to sell you anything. Walk the tester to the door and judge it in daylight, in the middle of the day, out of direct sun. If you cannot get near a window, take a sample home. Do not settle it with a selfie either: your phone corrects colour casts automatically, including the one you are trying to read. Reason two: you matched it to your hand

The back of your hand is one of the most sun-exposed patches of skin you own, usually a different depth from your face and often a different undertone. Matching a base to it is a habit picked up from watching sales assistants swatch, and swatching is for seeing the colour of a product, not for matching it to a person. The wrist is no better, and the chest is closer but is not the surface people look at.

Where should you test a foundation shade?

On your jaw, and then across the jaw onto your neck.

  1. Pick three candidates, not one. One shade has nothing to be compared against.
  2. Draw a stripe of each along your jaw, parallel, with a small gap between them.
  3. Blend only the edges, with a fingertip.
  4. Take it to daylight and wait.
  5. The right shade is the one you cannot find.

If your face and neck sit more than a step apart, which is common if your face gets more sun, do not solve it with the shade. Match the base to your face and take it down onto the neck. A shade that splits the difference is wrong in two places instead of one.

Reason three: you decided before it oxidised

Foundation shifts on the skin over the first minutes to hour of wear. It goes darker and warmer, and on some formulas it goes visibly orange. Why is argued about: pigment reacting with air and with the oil on your skin, and the water in the base evaporating and concentrating what is left. The mechanism is contested. The shift is not.

The direction matters more than the cause. Because the drift runs one way, judging at minute zero produces a predictable error: a base slightly too dark and slightly too warm, every time, at every brand. That is why the mistake repeats even when you change everything else.

The obvious workaround, buying a shade lighter on purpose, does not hold up. The size of the shift depends on the formula, on how oily your skin is that week and on what you put under it, so a fixed offset is wrong as often as it is right.

How long should you wait before deciding a foundation matches?

Ten minutes is the minimum and a full day is the real answer. Ten minutes catches most of the colour shift. A day catches the rest, plus what a stripe cannot tell you: whether it settles into fine lines, whether it fades at four hours, whether it grabs at a dry patch. Ask for a sample. Reason four: you bought the shade code, not the shade

A shade code is internal to one brand. No standards body governs foundation shade names, so nothing makes a 3 at one brand the same depth as a 3 at another, or an N at one the same hue as an N at another. Your code tells you where you sit inside one range. It carries almost nothing across the shop floor.

What do NC and NW mean at MAC?

The opposite of what most people assume, and MAC says so on its own site. MAC's foundation shade finder, checked on 22 August 2026, explains that a shade name carries two elements, letters and numbers. The number is depth, running from 5 to 65, and the page puts it plainly: "The lower the number, the lighter the shade." The letters are W, NW, N, NC and C.

Then comes the trap. On that page MAC defines cool, the C, as golden, and warm, the W, as rosy. Most of the industry means the reverse by those two words: golden skin is warm skin and rosy skin is cool skin. MAC does not hide it. The same page says, in its own words, "Other brands tend to define cool and warm tones as the opposite."

So if you are golden and you wear an NC shade at MAC, the letter you are looking for almost everywhere else is W. Someone who has worn NC for a decade and reasons from the letter walks out of a different shop holding a pink base, and then concludes that their skin is difficult. Their skin is fine. Two brands used the same word for opposite things.

Read a brand's own definition before you trust its letter. Better still, hold your undertone as a hue rather than as a letter borrowed from a range you are not standing in front of, which is what cool, warm or neutral is for.

Reason five: you bought the skin you want

It is the quietest of the five and the hardest to admit to. It shows up three ways.

You buy half a step lighter, because lighter feels like the flattering choice. It is not. A base lighter than your skin has no depth to blend into, so it reads chalky in daylight, greys out in photographs, and leaves the exact jaw line you were trying to avoid.

You buy pink to cancel redness. Pink over red does not cancel red, it stacks with it. Redness is a colour correction problem or a coverage problem, and it is not solved in the shade code.

You buy in the wrong season. Your depth moves through the year while your undertone barely does, so a shade bought in August is a shade for August, and most people need two in the same undertone family. The reasoning is in what is skin undertone.

Should you buy a foundation a shade lighter than your skin?

No. The one narrow exception is going lighter to compensate for a formula you have watched oxidise on your own face more than once, in the same direction. That is a measurement. Buying lighter because lighter sounds better is a guess, and it is the guess sitting in most of the bottles people give away.

Why does my foundation look grey in flash photographs?

Because of what is in the base, not because of its shade. Titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are physical sunscreens, and they sit in many bases with an SPF claim and in some setting powders. They bounce a camera flash straight back, which prints as a pale grey mask slightly inside your hairline. Going darker does not fix it and leaves you too dark in daylight. Change the product, not the shade.

Where a try-on fits, and where it does not

That answers the question a shade code cannot: how a finished look sits on your face, all twelve regions at once, before you have bought any of it. It does not answer whether one bottle of base matches your jaw. Looksmith does not measure your foundation shade or tell you your undertone, and nothing rendered on a screen has been on your skin for ten minutes. The stripe test stays.

The short version

Wrong shades are not bad luck and they are not difficult skin. They come from a test run in the wrong light, on the wrong patch of skin, read too early, against a code that does not travel, for a face you do not currently have.

Fix the test and the shade fixes itself. If the shade you keep getting wrong is a lipstick rather than a base, the failure mode is a different one, and it is in what lipstick colour suits my skin tone.
