How to know if a lipstick will suit me

A lipstick's tube colour is its mass tone, not the finished result, because your own lip colour sits underneath and takes part in what you see.

A lipstick's tube shows its mass tone, the pigment at full strength, not the colour that ends up on your mouth. Your own lip has a colour of its own underneath, and a sheer or satin formula lets that colour take part in the result. An arm swatch tells you the tube's true hue. Only your own lip tells you what it becomes on you.

The tube shows the mass tone, not the finished colour

In colour work, the solid pigment you see in the bullet is called its mass tone: full strength, before it meets anything else. It is the truest reading of the pigment on its own, which is useful and also incomplete, because a lipstick is not opaque paint sitting on a blank surface. It sits on your lips, and your lips have their own colour before you touch them with anything.

That matters more here than almost anywhere else on a face. The skin covering your lips is thinner than the skin your foundation gets matched against (Shang and others, Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, 2024, 23(8), 2676 to 2680), which put its outer layer at three to five cell layers, against roughly three times that depth on the rest of the face. It carries almost no pigment of its own and sits over a dense bed of capillaries, which is why lips read red before anything is applied to them. A wrist or the back of a hand is covered in thicker, more opaque skin, so a swatch there shows you the mass tone close to how a lab would read it. Your mouth is a far less opaque surface sitting over its own colour, and a sheer or satin lipstick lets that colour take part in the result.

Why does the same lipstick look different on two people with the same skin tone?

Because lip colour and skin undertone are not the same variable, and a shade chart built on undertone stays silent about the first one. Two people can share a skin depth and undertone and still sit at different points on their own lip's scale, from pale rose to a deep wine some people carry naturally at the corners of the mouth. A sheer nude over pale lips reads close to the tube. The same tube over darker, more pigmented lips picks up warmth and depth from underneath, and can read a full shade darker or redder than the swatch promised. Neither lip is wrong. The tube was never describing either one on its own.

How to read an arm swatch, and adjust it for your lips

An arm swatch is not useless. It is the one place you can see the mass tone without your own colour getting in the way, so it tells you the true hue and the true finish, which is worth knowing before anything else. What it will not tell you is how much of that colour survives contact with your own mouth. That depends on one thing: how opaque the formula is.

Run this check on the swatch itself, in daylight, before the product goes anywhere near your lips.

  1. Draw a full-strength stripe on the inside of your wrist, where the skin is thin and evenly lit.
  2. Look at the skin either side of the stripe. If your wrist's own colour and its veins have vanished under the stripe, the formula is opaque, and the swatch is a fair prediction of your lips too.
  3. If you can still see your wrist's own colour or the shadow of a vein through the stripe, the formula is sheer or buildable. Your lips, being less opaque than your wrist, will let more of your own colour through than the swatch did.
  4. Adjust from there. A sheer swatch that already reads warm or deep on a pale wrist will read warmer and deeper again on lips that carry pigment of their own.

Does finish change what the swatch tells you?

Yes, and it moves in the same direction as opacity. Matte and cream formulas are usually the most pigmented, so they cover more of your own colour and the swatch predicts more of the result. Gloss, balm and sheer stain behave closer to a tint over glass: whatever the swatch reads, expect more of the final colour to come from your own lip once the product is actually on your mouth.

Five ways a lipstick fails, and what each one means

A lipstick rarely fails by being the wrong colour outright. It fails in one of five specific ways, and the failure tells you what went wrong if you know what to look for.

Why did it match my wrist but not my mouth?

Because a swatch match and a lip match answer two different questions. The wrist tells you the mass tone is right. It cannot tell you whether your own lip colour will sit quietly under that tone or push back against it, and for anything short of a fully opaque matte, some pushing back is normal. Read a wrist mismatch as a warning on its own. Read a wrist match on its own as only half the answer.

Treat the arm swatch as a hue and finish check, never as a colour promise. It answers what the lipstick is. Your own lip answers what it becomes. Skip either step and you are buying on faith in a tube that was never describing your mouth in the first place.
